Earlier last week, South Sudan political differences evidently took a twilight shape. An intervention from foreign ministers of the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) to quell the situation in a planned meeting tomorrow to discuss the seemingly uncontrolled situation in the waring factions.
The Commandant in Chief and opposition stronghold of SPLM/A-IO Dr. Riak Machar was purportedly ousted and replaced with Gen. Simon Gatwech Dual, the former SPLA-IO Chief of General Staff. This announcement sent shockwaves to many as Prominent military leaders of the SPLA-IO.
Dr. Riek Machar forces retaliated by attacking the headquarters of Gen. Gatwech based in Magenis  (Kitgwang) in the country’s Upper Nile region and fatally claimed the lives of his own soldiers.
A statement issued today by the Sudanese foreign minister Mariam Sadig al Mahdi confirmed  IGAD Council of Ministers will have an emergency meeting of all IGAD member-states on Monday, August 9, 2021, to discuss the SPLM-IO latest developments and benchmark way forward.
The call for a meeting comes a day after tensions boil within the SPLM-IO leadership that ignited clashed at Magenis, a northern-most town located near the Sudanese border, after a group of military leaders led by SPLA-IO military chief General Simon Gatwech Dual removed Machar as leader of the group despite contentious retention claims by the Machar leadership confirming the position of SPLM/IO still under their control.
