June 09, 2020 (RB), On Tuesday, South Sudan member of parliament’s chief whip proposed that South Sudan should always stand with Ethiopia. Hon. Bor Gatwech Kuany the representative of Maiwut county, a town near Ethiopia border, decried amid serious diplomatic collapse between Ethiopia and Egypt.
He reminded the South Sudanese to reflect their past history with the Horn of Africa’s powerful nation. Ethiopia the only country in Africa not colonized amassed wealth of pride in her citizens that anything touches their borders would be met with fire and fury.
“Ethiopia is not just a friend but a brother to South Sudan. From the time of Emperor Haile Selassie to Marxist President Mengistu Haile Mariam, to Prime Minister Meles Zenawi, to Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn, and to current Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, Ethiopia always stood with people of South Sudan through thick and thin. Ethiopia never turns its back from South Sudan and all its woes”, he lectures.
Bor added that in the days of the first South Sudanese revolutionary revolt led by the Anyanyas, “Ethiopia help bring peace back” to South Sudan.
“And when that peace faltered, Ethiopia offered both political and military support to the SPLA to spearhead the war of liberation. When the option for war was not attainable, Ethiopia championed peace that eventually culminated to the achievement of independence”
“During the last civil war of South Sudan, Ethiopia managed to maintain a neutral position and work only for the restoration of sanity back to the Republic of South Sudan. This is because Ethiopia sees South Sudan as one person and a true brother. The people of South Sudan should stand with Ethiopia whenever and wherever they need it and especially during their trying moments as they used to do to the people of the South of the Sudan” read a post on his social media post.
Both Juba and Addis Ababa have come a long away. While Ethiopia maintains her distance only to peace concerning the world’s young nation’s affairs, Cairo actively continues to supply military equipment and unspecific donations to the government of President Salva Kiir Mayardit.
This WEEK, South Sudan ambassador to Ethiopia, James Morgan was summoned by Dr. Abiy Ahmed’s leadership to help clarify a video circulating on social media, Morgan dismissed such allegations and said his country is committed to maintaining a peaceful relationship with Ethiopia.
Over the issues of the giant massive infrastructure dam being build by Ethiopia, Cairo is doing everything possible to reach an agreement with Addis Ababa even if that means war. Ethiopia has drawn a red line on this issue.
