Opinion: Elbow Chuol

We had an exam in 5 days. But I had to travel with my twin brother back home from school to vote for the Independence of South Sudan.

We anticipated in line for 8 hours before we had an opportunity to steer our fingers into a tiny orthogonal paper that our ancestors have been hoping to see for 200 years. We claimed our sovereignty. It was an idea championed by my grandfather, Hon. Both Diu and his colleague.

Finally, for the first time in more than 50 years, South Sudanese voted for the separation from North Sudan because the unity of the Sudanese was legislated impossible by the ruling elites in Khartoum. Fine. Sudan was too big. Each of us needed to enjoy a slide of this cake in peace.

Ushered into a new country by the former guerilla fighters, SPLM/A was a lighting hope for the new nation. Wakanda, the land of blue-black was the future for the descendant of its progenies. This hope was to be concrete into prosperity and reconstruct a broken nation. It was not so. Woe to the land of whirring wings? (Isaiah 18).

No way. Dr. John Garang surprisingly died in 2005, or rather, predestinated excreted mysteriously. Although he envisioned a peaceful democratic integrated Sudan, Dr. John had an impression of what a nation should signify. South Sudan’s future was momentarily altered.

We promptly ought for a situational leader, President Salva Kiir Mayardit.  Kiir has no perception of a new country. A socio-communist guerilla fighter turned into an illusive capitalist by pacifying his comrades with the wealth of the nation. Kiir instinctively plunged the nation into one of the worse civil wars ever observe in Sudan.

He will never unite the people of South Sudan. The president is loyal to his tribe exceeding the country. He is more a recollection of the past host sent to punish the future than a reformist ushering the new nation into a conceivable peaceful nation. He is not or his comrades- nation builder.

Pres. Salva Kiir has no mental capacity to build the nation or unite it. He hates his enemies with apparent intrusiveness. He kept reminding them of the past and affirmed them of ultimate payback. He has no hint about institutional assemblage.

Through him, the country successfully created paytriot citizens with unquestionable zeal for politicians. Very few see this as a blessing rather than a scourge.  The political marketplace of the young nation put together a bold of a new generation who have no moral sympathy in building their home but buys/bought fancy houses and keep their wealth outside the borders. You can not for the sake of truth, build a nation whose structural institutions are substantiated by the race of assembling its wealth outside its very hut.

More than half a million are loitering in distress inside UN camps across the country. Several million facing famine and hunger. Over 2 million are now refugees across the neighboring countries.

Go, swift messengers, to a people tall and smooth-skinned, to a people feared far and wide, a belligerent nation of strange speech, whose land is divided by rivers (Isaiah 18: 2). Tell them you shall overcome. You have done it before. You will do it in the future. A resilient nation celebrating its freedom in distress.
