Kiir urges for cooperation in EAC summit

The president of the Republic of South Sudan, H.E President Salva Kiir Mayard attended the recent 21st ordinary East African Community Heads of State Summit, where the region’s leaders gathered on an online video conference call to discuss, important issues surrounding an effective regional integration.

Several heads of states were in attendance including, H.E. President Salva Kiir Mayardit of the Republic of South Sudan, H.E. President Paul Kagame of the Republic of Rwanda, H.E. President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni of the Republic of Uganda, H.E. Uhuru Kenyatta of the Republic of Kenya, H.E. Deputy President Samia Suluhu of the United Republic of Tanzania, H.E. President Evariste Ndayishimiye of Burundi.

In the meeting, H.E President Salva Kiir Mayardit urged the EAC Secretariat to work with the officials from South Sudan to work out the amount country owes to the EAC.

According to the office of the President, South Sudan is committed if the formula for repayment of arrears is determined.

He said “the payment can be made without default in 2021”, to show the commitment of the country, Kiir announced a remit of $ 1. 5 million as the first payment of 8.4 million.

The president appealed for visa-free for South Sudanese visiting East Africa Countries.

“It is in our best interest to ease the movement of people and goods within the region in order to facilitate trade and investment as well as contributing to our end goal of East African regional integration,” the president said.

In the meeting, the president also said South Sudan needs additional capacity development support once the National Revenue Authority (NRA) from East Africa Community structures to fast-track joining the custom Unions in the near future.

The EAC summit elects Dr. Peter Mutuku Mathuki from Kenya as the Secretary and H.E President Uhuru Kenyatta of the Republic of Kenya as the Chairman. He took over from H.E President Paul Kagme of the Republic of Rwanda.

Several judges were sworn into the East Africa Court of Justice.

In his opening speech, H.E President Uhuru Kenyatta said his country will give visa-free for South Sudan as requested by H.E President Salva Kiir Mayardit.
