The country’s First Vice President and prominent leader of Sudan People’s Liberation Movement Dr. Riek Machar in an address to journalists condemned the untimely arrest of Kuel Aguer the former governor for Northern Bahr el Ghazal state.
Earlier this week , a group[ of security personnel from national security service arrested the former governor Aguer after it was alleged that he participated in the planning and establishment of a civil rights group whose eminent goal is to mobilize the citizens for a popular uprising against the government of President Salva Kiir in the wake of economic and political crisis despite the signing of a peace agreement in 2018.
Today, the SPLM-IO Political Bureau met purposely to focus and pay keen attention to the defection of the SPLM-IO chief of General Staff General Simon Gatwech Dual. Key on the agenda, Machar went ahead to condemn the arrest of Aguer prompting him to demand his immediate release as he made reference to the revitalized peace agreement which clearly stipulates and provides for freedom of speach and expression to citizens.
Additionally, the SPLM-IO Political Bureau in their meeting today expressed an urgent concern for the arbitrary detention of some members of the Peoples’ Coalition for Civil Action, as they exercised their constitutional rights of freedom of speech, expression and association which is provided for in the revitalization of peace.
